“Bag lady you gon’ hurt your back draggin’ all them bags like that.  I guess nobody ever told you, all you must hold on to is you…”

–Erykah Badu

It is interesting the amount of baggage we carry each day and not even realize it.  We are innately free beings and the world comes and tell us: “take this” “hold on to this” “you need this, keep it.”  Do we ever ask ourselves, “why?”

I went to guided mediation at the Meditation Lounge located in St. Louis, Sunday with the wonderful facilitator, Simone.  She took us on a journey on an amazing healing journey.  We were on a path along the way we saw bags, we picked them up, were then lead to, what I call the reflection and contemplation, bench along our path to examine what was in our bags.  I was reluctant to open my bag and when I did it was empty.  I was perplexed but left the bags there and continued on my journey.  At the end of class everyone shared their experiences and told of the things in their bags they had to let go of and how those things blessed them with stronger knowledge of self.  As I’m hearing everyone’s revelations and confirmations of growth, I ask again “why was my bag empty?”  I pondered on this and asked God to reveal to me the meaning.  Then as I was readying myself for bed, it hit me!  It was not about me lacking growth or understanding of the lessons I have learned.  It was that I no longer held on to those things.  I had freed myself of those negative attachments that no longer served the person I am today.  I learned the lesson and moved on.  So, why carry empty bags?  What would you do with empty bags? Fill them, right?  So I left the empty bags so I would not feel the need to fill them with things that are unnecessary.  If I do not have the bags, I cannot create a new load for myself to carry.  I can truly be free of those burdens and focus only on what I need, what I can always hold on it, which is me and the divine within me.

Many times we let go of things only to pick up new luggage to fill and carry with us, never truly letting go and trusting fully in ourselves.  We feel we need people or things to define who we are, our worth and value.  In truth, you only need you because what is Divine peace and love is within you.  No one or nothing can give you what you already have in your possession.  When you let go, give thanks for the lessons, and trust fully in you and the God within you; you will be free.  You will feel immense love and peace; you will feel the spirit of God continuously and forever.

Thank you for sharing in this experience with me. May something that I have written resonate with you and bring you peace, love, and a light that never extinguishes. 🙂
